The myths of AI happens because it’s no longer just science fiction or fantastic speculation, artificial intelligence (AI) is real. It is here, all around us, and it has become an integral part of our lives. We have only taken our first steps in adopting new intelligent and autonomous technologies, AI is providing us with powerful alternative methods to carry out our tasks of all kinds and achieve our goals. We use these new tools every day, often without choice and often without even realizing it, from applications that optimize our personal lives and social activities to programs and business practices that enable fresh ways to gain a competitive advantage.

At home and in our entertainment spaces, our methods and mechanisms are changing. At work, it is the same: our operating systems, software programs that facilitate our work, production processes, marketing strategies, sales tools, and customer service systems are changing and making our work more and more agile. In research, experts of all kinds are now using artificial intelligence to ask deeper questions and get information and answers that were not previously available. It is increasingly used by governments around the world to advance their national agendas and protect the cultural integrity, assets, and security of their citizens.

In short, the individuals, organizations, and nations at the forefront of AI are learning to wield enormous additional advantages over those left behind. But even for those who are at the forefront of implementing this type of technology, they have significant risks in the future. And for those who can’t keep up, there will be substantial costs and losses. In the age of artificial intelligence, those who come second will perceive a distant and diminishing value.

Every day I speak with people from various sectors of the public and private sectors, including leading technology firms, academic institutions, national research labs, and policy think tanks. I have been fortunate to advise companies of all kinds in Latin America and give presentations to audiences from a wide variety of backgrounds, education, and occupations. Regardless, I have learned a lot about the common misperceptions and misgivings people have when trying to understand the myths of AI and AI in its essence. Most conversations about artificial intelligence, whether in auditoriums, offices, or coffee shops, begin or end with the following questions:

  • What is AI?
  • Will it change what aspects of our lives?
  • What changes will be good and what will be bad?
  • What is the position of the nations of the world on this?
  • And what can we do to ensure that we use AI legally, morally, and ethically?
